You can do the Chromecast and Mac(book) just work together. You do need software from Google for this, otherwise the connection will not work. That is not very surprising, since the Chromecast is a hardware product of the search engine giant.
De Chromecast is one of the most flexible devices you can get at home (built-in or external). With such a device in your home, you can stream content from all kinds of devices televisions, media players, smart speakers and of course the smart displays from various manufacturers.
That sounds very cool, but there is a large product category that is in fact already excluded from participation: products from Apple. Without the help of extra software or sometimes detours, it is not possible to download content from a Macbook or iMac stream to the Chromecast.
Chromecast and Mac(book): the basics
This was already apparent from our articles about the iPhone and video streaming service Apple TV +. But another important product of the Cupertino company is of course the Mac(book) line. Fortunately, there is also a method in which the Chromecast and Mac(book) can work together.
The installation and pairing process shouldn't take more than ten minutes. We'll start with the Chromecast. You need that device of course install first. Have you already done that? Then you can skip this step. Stop the Chromecast into your TV's HDMI port (or set up your TV with built-in Chromecast good at).
- Then go to the correct channel of the Chromecast. For people with a Chromecast built-in device, it doesn't matter what channel the TV is on.
- Follow the on-screen instructions or (and hold this article at hand). Or go to this page from Google, which guides you through the installation process.
During the installation process you will be prompted to download the Google Home app. It doesn't matter if you use an Android or iOS device for this. Since we are talking about Apple products here, we assume that you Google Home on your iPhone used.

During installation, the Chromecast automatically in the app, which is what it basically comes down to when you follow the steps on screen. Most importantly, the Chromecast and Mac (and iPhone) are all on the same Wi-Fi network, so they can see and find each other.

Previously, you had to download a specific file for the Mac in order to Chromecast installed via a Mac(book). Since the installation process now takes place entirely on a smartphone or tablet, that option is deprecated and is no longer being used.
Chromecast and Mac(book): the browser
To be able to use the connection that has just been established, you must use the Google Chrome browser. You can download that browser here. Do you already have it? Then it is important that you always keep it up-to-date. Chrome automatically indicates when an update is available.
When you are sure that the Chromecast and Mac are on the same network, then we can start casting. Casting is the principle of forwarding content from the source device to the target device. In this case you send a file from your Mac (source) to the Chromecast (goal).
- Open the Chrome browser.
- Press the three dots at the top right for the settings.
- From this menu, select Cast…
- Under the heading sources you select what exactly you want to cast: the current tab, your entire desktop or a specific file. Make your choice.
- Now select the device (the one just set up Chromecast Or the Chromecast already installed).
- The content is now forwarded to your television or media player.

Some products and services offer standard Chromecastoptions. Consider, for example, the YouTube website. In a video window you will find the Cast button. That is a square screen with three WiFi bars in it, in the left corner. Press it and select the device.
Casting with JustStream
It is also possible to use another application that allows you to stream from your Mac to a Chromecast: JustStream. This is considered the best streaming app for Mac. The app works with Chromecast, Apple TV and all kinds of televisions with extensive DLNA options on board.
After installing the app works as follows. Tap the JustStream app in the menu bar, then select the target device you want to cast to. You have to Chromecast or already installed. After that, you can start streaming content right away.
