If you ever watch YouTube, you've seen the Premium trial month come by. But what is the YouTube Premium price? But also, how can you get this a lot cheaper? Fortunately, there is a very simple trick for that.
YouTube Premium
YouTube Premium saw the light of day in 2014 (then known as YouTube Red) and has gained more and more features over the years. More and more countries could also make use of this.
Before we get to the YouTube Premium price, let's take a look at exactly what you can do with it. Because what are you actually paying for?
- No ads – No more ads on YouTube, so no more waiting before you can play a video. This also applies to YouTube Kids.
- Play videos in the background – If you do not have the YouTube app on your screen (on a smartphone or tablet), it can still continue to play.
- Download videos – Download videos to watch them later – in the YouTube app – offline
- YouTube Music – Listen to music without interruptions and ads including offline listening.
The functions do depend on the type of subscription, but more on that later.
YouTube Premium and Premium Lite
There are several subscriptions available today. For example, there is YouTube Premium Lite and the regular Premium.
The YouTube Premium price is higher than Lite, but let's first look at the features in the different subscriptions.
YouTube | YouTube Premium Lite | YouTube Premium | |
---|---|---|---|
Ad free | ❌ | ✔ | ✔ |
Ad free (Youtube Kids) | ❌ | ✔ | ✔ |
Play in background | ❌ | ❌ | ✔ |
Download videos | ❌ | ❌ | ✔ |
YouTube Music (+offline) | ❌ | ❌ | ✔ |
The conclusion we can draw from the table above is that YouTube Premium Lite actually only ensures that the ads are not visible. You need YouTube Premium for all other features.
Which one should I choose? Premium or Lite?
Fill in the questions below and you will immediately see which subscription best suits your needs.
YouTube Premium price
But what is the YouTube Premium price? YouTube premium costs € 11,99 per month and the Lite version costs € 6,99 per month. If you want to use Premium with the whole family (6 people), you pay € 17,99 per month.
As you now know, there are two different subscriptions, each of which has its own options and extras.
Price (1 account) | Price (family, 6 accounts) | |
---|---|---|
YouTube Premium Lite | € 6,99 per month | Nvt |
YouTube Premium | € 11,99 per month | € 17,99 per month |
There are also annual subscriptions available, you get a discount if you pay directly for a year. However, the YouTube Premium annual subscriptions are not available in the Netherlands.

But, can it also be cheaper?
Yep, it can also be cheaper. Fortunately, you don't have to perform any crazy actions for this, but there are countries where YouTube Premium is cheaper. You can also easily use it.
Like many other companies, YouTube has also adjusted prices per country. This means that things such as income in that country are taken into account and the price is adjusted accordingly. The Netherlands is reasonably prosperous and the price is therefore slightly higher there. In other, less prosperous countries, therefore, less must be paid. For Netflixsubscriptions the same principle is applied.
So there are countries where the subscription is also a lot cheaper. With a little trick you can also benefit from this. This is not rocket science, so you can do this too!
Before I explain how this works, first an overview of countries where the low price applies.
Below you can see that Turkey is advantageous if you take out a subscription yourself. If you want a family subscription (so with 6 people), Argentina is a better idea.
Land | Premium (month) | Premium (year) | Premium Family (monthly) |
---|---|---|---|
Argentina | €1,64 (ARS 389) | €2,96 (ARS 699) | |
Turkey | € 1,51 (TRY 29,99) | € 15,12 (TRY 299,99) | € 3,02 (TRY 59,99) |
As can be seen in the screenshot below, the prices (in local currency) are cheaper than in the Netherlands. Much cheaper even.
The two countries in this overview, Argentina and Turkey, are among the cheapest. But can you also lower the YouTube Premium price in the Netherlands? The answer is: yes!
Explanation YouTube Premium cheaper
Fortunately, it is quite easy to take out a YouTube subscription cheaper, with the step-by-step plan below you should have succeeded in no time.
Only use this method if you actually have an address in the country in question. In addition, always check the conditions of YouTube / Google.
– Turkey – If you want to take out a subscription for yourself per month/year
– Argentina – If you want to go for a Family subscription
Good to know about YouTube Premium
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering subscribing to YouTube Premium. This ensures that you will not be faced with unnecessary surprises.
1. Google Workspace YouTube Premium
It's not possible to get a Premium subscription if you have a Google Workspace account (Gmail for business). So you really have to do with a private Google account.
It is not yet known whether this will be possible in the future, but for the time being you cannot take YouTube Premium with a Google Work account.
2. Free Trial Rules
There are some rules for the YouTube Premium free trial. For example, there are logically limitations on how often you can start this free period.
- Trial period of 1 month – Available for new users or 6 months after canceling YouTube Premium, Music Premium or Google Play membership. You may 1 trial period per 12 months use.
- Trial period of 3 months – This is only available for new users, or if you canceled your YouTube Premium, Music Premium or Google Play membership more than 3 years ago. This is just Allowed 1x every 3 years!
3. Choose the right subscription
Take a good look at the features you want with YouTube Premium. If you don't want ads, the Lite version is best. But for all other functions you need the more expensive plan.
This includes background playback and full use of YouTube Music.
4. Share with your family members
As you have seen above, it is much cheaper to share a subscription with your family. 6 people then have access to all features of Premium, without paying (much) extra for it.
Perhaps you can split the costs between you. If you want to use this function, you must create a family within your Google account.

5. On all devices
Once you have a paid subscription to YouTube, you will immediately have access to these features on all devices. Apps are available for many different devices, including:
- Android
- iOS (iPhone and iPad)
- Web (Chrome, Safari and any other browser)
- Game Consoles
- Smart TV's
- Apple TV
- Google TV (on Chromecast)
Also make sure that you are logged in with the correct account, otherwise you will not be able to use these options.
Is YouTube Premium worth the money?
Of course, that's different for everyone, but if you're on YouTube a lot, then it's definitely worth considering. Especially if you don't want to see ads, play videos in the background and have the option to download videos in good quality.
Of course, the choice also depends on your monthly budget, but the above method may help.

Has anyone tried this recently? I get an error message when paying with a credit card. This has to do with the address, an identification check is done via my credit card. Anyone experience with this?
